The world’s first parking lot for bicycles has been built in the Netherlands. The giant building designed by Nunc Architecten has enough space to house 700 bicycles all at once. It was built in response to the bike congestion in the town of Zaandam, where there is a large cycling community.   The sustainable bike house is built from locally sourced materials and can generate electricity from its rooftop solar panels. It also uses natural ventilation. The building provides secure bike storage for free while maintaining a minimum ecological footprint. We’ve seen similar concepts that support bike culture, such as the recently launched bicycle vending machine in Minneapolis that functions as a 24-hour bicycle repair centre. We hope that more cities develop projects that consider cyclists with equal treatment to motorists, helping cyclists feel more comfortable in urban areas.
