First our mobiles got smaller, and then the whole world switched to smartphones. Apple followed with a wraparound phone, breaking all rules. But the new flexible device prototype, developed by the researchers at Queen’s University in Ontaria, Canada, goes even further. MorePhone can be programmed so that its shape changes based on the type of incoming message or caller. Its screen is composed of flexible plastic, connected to the shape-memory alloy wires. The corners of the phone can contract and bend based on the electronic signals received. These signals can alter the device’s original shape, allowing to distinguish between different types of alerts. Users can also receive silent notifications. MorePhone is still a prototype, but the team behind it aims to develop a model that would be able to fold into a three-dimensional object in the near future. If all goes to plan, it will be in the hands of the consumers in the next five years.
