We’ve all been there. You’re hanging out with friends or family, and rather than focusing on the moment and engaging, the smartphone comes out. Instagram gets checked. Facebook and Twitter get updated. Rewarding, real-world connections are eschewed for transient digital interactions.

A new iOS app called Moment is looking to help smartphone addicts find a healthier balance between their real life and their digital one. Tracking how much you use your phone during the day, the app helps you create daily usage limits, as well as giving you occasional nudges when you’re coming close to those limits.

Unlike other quantifying apps, Moment only needs to be set up once. After that, it runs in the background – invisible to all intents and purposes. As people becoming increasingly wary of the detrimental effects of their online environments (whether it’s work or play), Moment may be just the ticket. Download it for free here.
