Chad Hurley and Steve Chen, the founders of YouTube have developed MixBit, the newest video app competing with Vine and Instagram. There are a few major differences between the apps however. First, MixBit is totally anonymous. Users cannot post under a name nor can they comment on another user’s work. Second, as the name suggests, there is an emphasis on mixing and editing videos and not just the user’s own videos but any video publicly shared on the app.

While the app allows 16 second of footage per video, users are able to stitch 259 individual clips together to form a movie, spanning approximately an hour. According to Mr. Hurley, “the whole purpose of MixBit is to reuse the content within the system... really want to focus on great stories that people can tell.” This social swapping component sets MixBit apart from its video counterparts and introduces a new collaborative element to video sharing.

It's interesting to see a platform like this move away from the traditional social media features and focus more on the creative element behind such systems.
