Get to know Mayer Hawthorne, artist and producer from one of our favourite record labels Stones Throw. He’s just released a collection of covers ‘Impressions’, which you can download for free here - included in the mix is Chromeo’s ‘Don’t Turn The Lights On’ which has been morphed into a eerie love song from the original electro disco vibe.   It’s not just contemporary music either. Hawthorne’s thrown in some hidden bits and pieces too like ‘Fantasy Girl’ by Steve Salazar, who died at 27 due to a heart condition. It’s all very romantic, Salazar was  from Pasadena and recorded an album with Shorty’s Portion in the 70s - included in the vinyl sleeve belonging to Hawthorne is a handwritten note from the man addressed to anyone that could help his band get a record deal. It is always nice to get a the story behind the song and in this case, the story behind the cover of the song. Give it a listen and click here to read more of Hawthorne’s thoughts on the songs he covered.
