Make your smartphone amphibious
Impervious waterproofing spray uses nanotechnology to make your gadgets submersible
Impervious waterproofing spray uses nanotechnology to make your gadgets submersible Impervious is a spray solution which is able to waterproof any electronic device. Easy and quick to use, a coating on the exterior of the device, whether it be smartphone or laptop, will protect against splashes and spills. Nice enough – but the best part is that an application to the interior will result in a phone that is completely waterproof up to a depth of three feet. Which means that you can drop it in your toilet to your heart’s content. And even that isn’t complicated, with tools provided as well as a video tutorial to guide you through application. The spray forms a microsopic layer of hexagonal metal nanostructures which bond to the surface they’re applied to, preventing any materials from passing. The superhydrophobic nanotechnology is able to provide waterproofing categorised as IPX7, defined as being able to withstand submersion up to 1 metre for 30 minutes. And not just in water: apparently the liquids that have been tested include motor oil and milk. The coating dries completely transparent and won’t leave a residue so you’ll probably forget it’s there, and at just $20 – a bit less than a new phone – you won’t have to do much thinking about it either. However, for obvious reasons, the manufacturers insist that you don’t throw your phone in the sea on purpose like an idiot, and probably try not ruining it at all. But with proper application, devices will be protected against ‘accidental’ submersion, without the hassle of claiming on the insurance.
