Most city-dwellers don’t have the privilege of picking and eating fruit as soon as it ripens, which is why Nurture could be so appealing for those who would like greener fingers .
Design student Hyunhee Hwang has created a living basket of fruit to ensure consumers are getting the freshest produce possible. Instead of conventional packaging, the living roots of the plants are used to form a basket that contains them, this way they remain fresh and don’t lose any of their nutritional value during transportation. This is particularly useful for fruits that have a high nutrient content but perish quickly after being picked, such as berries and figs. The Nurture fruit baskets also come with a display stand, a spritzer to keep the plants moist, and forceps and scissors to pick the fruit.
Hwang came up with the idea as part of his Masters degree, but believes the Nurture fruit basket could become a weekly delivery service for people who want to ensure they’re getting a good quantity of fresh fruit in their diets.
