Joelle Aeschlimann at ECAL has created a unique new take on the traditional music box. Joelle has produced prototypes of small wooden boxes that, when used along with the iPad, create custom music and visual effects triggered by the rotation of a metal crank at the top.

In order to allow the boxes to be compatible with the iPad, Joelle constructed the boxes in wood with a strip of metal at finger height and two small conductive rubber tips at the base. The position of these rubber tips tells the app at which rate to play and display the animations and sound.

It's an interesting project as it employs the use of tangible objects to create output in a purely digital medium. Check it out here.
