Urban researchers suggest that the reconversion of industrial buildings or abandoned sites into creative spaces that can host interactive installations, pop-up exhibitions, and other happenings, might lead the way to a wider urban regeneration. The latest project of this sort comes from artist Bill Fitzgibbons. LightRails is a light installation that transforms a derelict street underpass in Birmingham, Alabama, into a vibrant tunnel of colours. To encourage pedestrian traffic between two major areas of the city, Fitzgibbons designed a computerised LED network made of 250 units that change colors and frequencies. The rainbow installation is only a part of a greater plan devised by REV Birmingham that aims to animate the city, and to make it more connected and secure by illuminating some of its key structures.
