Laser Fruit Tattoos
Fruit gets tattooed with lasers as an environmentally friendly alternative to sticky labels
As evidenced from Serviceplan Munich’s Grand Prix Lion winning Self Scan report, consumers care about the sustainability of the products they purchase and look to hold companies accountable for their environmental practices. A new EU ruling allows for the branding of fruit using chemicals applied with a laser. Spearheaded by Spanish company Laser Food, this new technique would do away with the waste of paper, glue and plastic used in those pesky stickers.
To make these 'fruit tattoos,' iron oxides and hydroxides are applied on the skin of the fruit. This makes the branding and country of origin easier to read without penetrating the skin of the fruit. The tattoos will also include a bar code with information about the sustainability of the produce. By producing something not only visually compelling but also environmentally sound, Laser Food hopes to usher in a more sustainable era of consumerism.
