Traditionally, fashion lookbooks have always been a bit, well, yawn. Phillip Lim, however, has a vision to switch things up – by combining the world of catwalks with the world of comics. Drawing on his A/W 2012 collection “and the neo-noir heroines who embody it,” Kill The Night promises to be the most fashionable comic book project to date.

Part collection showcase, part monochromatic thriller, it’s out to refresh the predictable lookbook, the comic’s noir-esque characters garbed in Lim’s angular finery. Perhaps more importantly, it also reminds us of how far the comic industry has grown out of its old stereotypes of adolescence and social-awkwardness (backed-up by the on-going Hollywood barrage of Marvel schlock).

Lim has co-written Kill the Night with comic veteran John Ostrander, suggesting it should be pretty sensitive to traditional comic sensibilities. And, according to their site and social media channels at least, Kill the Night is “a story of duality. Day and night, black and white, love and betrayal.” Which is gunning pretty hard.

“Things are not what they seem,” the teaser urges.

“Look again,” it beckons meaningfully.

Presumably to peer beyond the dark and thrilling plotline and Sin City-esque graphics and to appreciate the killer fashion worn by our masked super-heroines. Some of whom are even fashioned (ahem) on Lim’s own friends.

Kill the Night is officially released September 22nd with a launch event tied in to Vogue’s Fashion Night Out in New York.
