Catalan sculptor Jaume Plensa is exhibiting his work at the Yorkshire Sculpture Park. The open air exhibition includes new and recent pieces by the artist, many of which have a distinct tactile quality. Pieces include glass cabinets that visitors can enter, giant suspended steel letters, and engraved gongs that fill the space with sound when struck. Each encourages the viewer to interact and respond to the pieces. The illuminated, larger-than-life sculptures set against the outdoor landscape and the sky are dramatic and intriguing. Plensa is well known for his major public artwork internationally, with large outdoor city projects that create a dialogue between art, nature, sound and culture. We've seen that art and design is encouraging reciprocal communication more than ever, with designers such as Ying Gao also creating pieces that engage with the senses of spectators. Interactive projects such as these are embedding art into urban lifestyles and city landscapes, making conceptual and innovative art more accessible in every day life and culture.
