London design studio FIELD have created a new immersive light sculpture that incorporates movement, animated lights and spatialised sound.

East London design studio, FIELD are known for their immersive installations. Last year the duo collaborated with Nike to create an immersive audio visual running experience. Before that they worked with Universal Everything to create eight video artworks showing atmospheric cityscapes, hand-drawn sceneries, patterns and landscape animations.

Now FIELD are unveiling their latest project, located at King’s Cross, London. Spectra-3 is an immersive audio-visual light experience which is part of Lumiere London, a free outdoor light festival taking place throughout the city over the next four days.

“We wanted to create an immersive space with Spectra-3,” explain Field. “A sensory experience that people can get absorbed in.”

Spectra-3 draws the audience into a mesmerising space. A mirror disc moves on two axes accompanied with animated lights and spatialised sound. The work is part of a larger series, Spectra, that explores the idea of using technology to engage observers in their physical surroundings.

“We’re calling the pieces in the Spectra series ‘physical-digital sculptures’,” say Field. “Each one, in a different way, creates an immersive experience by connecting physical and digital elements: motor-controlled kinetic objects, reflective materials, light, projections and reflections, Generative software systems, data inputs, and sound tracks composed in real-time.”

Lumiere London runs from 14-17 January. Visit the website for more information.
