IKEA Warsaw has opened Kuchnia Spotkan, a fully furnished flat designed for local people to host dinner parties and family get togethers. Last month, IKEA's head of sustainability Steve Howard stated his belief at a Guardian Sustainability debate that consumers in the western world no longer had the same insatiable appetite for home furnishings. If we look on a global basis, in the west we have probably hit peak stuff. We talk about peak oil. I'd say we've hit peak red meat, peak sugar, peak stuff... peak home furnishings.

In light of this admission, and our need for their products being satiated, IKEA Warsaw has created a space where local families and friends can host dinner parties and familial get-togethers.

Those hiring the space need only bring their own essential ingredients, as the two-floor flat is completely furnished with IKEA products and stocked with all the utensils required for cooking, in addition to an IKEA recipe book.

Additionally, those who visit the space are encouraged to share their experiences via social media using the hashtag #kuchniaspotkanof, which in English means "kitchen encounters".

Though modern life and its attendant pressures have contrived to create a generation of young adults who feel both disconnected and increasingly time poor, in introducing Kuchnia Spotkan, Ikea is simultaneously attempting to engage with its consumers in new ways and also facilitate organic, communal experiences.
