Social media enables people to come together and connect, but what if it could be used to avoid interaction? Designer and developer Scott Garner created Hell Is Other People, an experiment in anti-social media. Using the FourSquare site, the mobile platform will track your “friends” and calculate optimally distanced locations for avoiding them. The map is generated using Google Maps API and is stylishly customized. Orange points are check-ins of FourSquare users and green points indicate 'safe zones'. Unfortunately, the system only works if users actually check-in on FourSquare and otherwise it generally directs the user into less densely populated areas.

Named after Jean-Paul Sartre’s existentialist play No Exit, Hell Is Other People is part satire, part dialogue on the manner in which sometimes social media can be, well, a bit too social.
