Ikea's iconic Frakta bag has been updated by contemporary Danish designers HAY.

IKEA’s annual Democratic Design Days summit, held at its Almhult headquarters in Sweden, saw the announcement of a collaboration with contemporary Danish designers HAY, the result of which will see the company’s iconic Frakta bag undergo an aesthetic revamp.

Gone are the instantly identifiable bright blue body, logoed handles and polypropylene composition. They’ll be replaced with a woven fabric of subtle forest green and white check. accompanied by forest green handles. “We worked with colours that we feel will be long lasting”, said HAY co-founder Mette Hay, at the launch.

The HAY x IKEA collaboration is comprised of over 70 pieces of lighting and furniture products that are slated for release in 2017. However, the updated Frakta bag was the only piece from the collection that was made immediately available at the summit.

Thanks to its blue and yellow colourway, heavily logoed handles, spacious interior and flat folding design, IKEA’s utilitarian Frakta bag is as iconic as the store’s maze-like interior and flat pack furniture.

Frakta’s uses extend beyond the confines of IKEA branches; many consumers utilise the hardy totes for laundry, plant relocation and even house moves.

IKEA’s collaboration with Hay is the second new relationship announced by the brand this year; the first featured a range of homeware created in tandem with London based fashion designer Katie Eary. You can read about the resulting ‘GITLIG’ collection here.
