When was the last time you received a handwritten letter? East London’s KK Outlet, a creative hub that sits comfortably between being a communications agency, art gallery, cafe and bookshop, has launched an exhibition that celebrates what seems like a distant memory now: handwritten letters. Graphic designer Craig Oldham set about organising the Hand.Written.Letter.Project to remind us to use the humble pen and paper. He invited leading designers and creative thinkers to share their ideas in handwritten form on personalised letterheads. Over 100 letters are now being exhibited at KK Outlet’s dynamic space. The project acts as a visual response to today’s cultural shift where writing letters to communicate is a thing of the past, having been replaced by digital communication via email, Facebook, Twitter, SMS, and Skype. It is interesting to see how the creative industry is reinvesting in traditional art techniques and physical production, as we have seen with projects such as People Of Print which we recently featured.   The exhibition ends 27th August. Limited edition books will be printed about the project, and all profits are to be donated to the Literacy Trust.
