Experts in the history of popular music may argue that it was the rise of MTV that shifted the way we interact with the art form from aural to visual. There is however no disputing that the rise of the internet has restricted most our musical output to be blaring out of a screen, making items that were once regarded as household staples such as HiFis or record players the possessions of only the most dedicated connoisseur.

With the Gramofon, social WiFi company Fon are building on a trend of creating products that are attempting to rethink the possibilities of the home music system. Like Chune, the interactive speaker that allows different users to load up their songs onto a communal playlist, the Gramofon is a stand alone router which, when connected to speakers, allows users to set songs to stream from your phone or tablet. What makes it interesting is that the Gramofon has a social function as it acts as a "modern Jukebox" in the sense that is allows multiple users to add songs to the playlist, just as long as they're within WiFi range.

Currently halfway towards its target goal on Kickstarter, the Gramofon is another example of the shift of music devices towards creating a more collaboratively generated experience.
