Google has just launched an 8-bit version of Google Maps designed for Nintendo gaming consoles. Google Maps Quest can be accessed online and has all the same functions as the regular Google Maps - you can search for landmarks, see the world on street view or get directions. But this time all via old school, glitchy graphics more suited to the 90s.

As well as all the normal functions, you can also, 'avoid dangerous paths, and battle your way through a world of powerful monsters and mystic treasures.'

Ok, ok. So Quest is probably the search engine's latest April Fool's prank. But we still like the idea, particularly as it seems relevant given the current digital backlash and growing nostalgia for lo-res, retro graphics that aren't quite so slick (as explored in our recent Dial-up Design Briefing). Plus the search gaint has actually put some of the concept into practice – just head over to Google Maps site, click on 'Quest' mode, and transform the world into blocky 8-bit.
