The Free Art and Technology lab in New York has created a new toy hacking kit that lets people join all their favourite childhood building brick toys together.

The Free Universal Construction Kit consists of a set of 80 adapter bricks that allow you to join together different piece of popular children’s construction toys, such as Lego, Duplo, Fischertechnik and K’Nex. In addition, instruction sheets that show you how to make new objects using the kit are available to download from open-source sites Thingiverse and the Pirate Bay's Physibles forum.

The kit shows how open-source innovation allows us to get more out of our existing products. It might be time to dig out that old box of Lego pieces.
