For this year’s Milan Design Week, Dezeen has teamed up with Space Caviar, a design collective led by former Domus editor Joseph Grima, to create a journalism machine that generates news via a custom made algorithm.

Called Fear Of Missing Out, aka FOMO, the smart contraption is solar-powered and combines voice recognition technology with social media scraping software to turn live speeches and tweets into articles. "FOMO is a commentary on the ever-accelerating automation of many professions, including journalism," according to Grima. "It tests the conceptual boundaries of publishing technology, questioning what the systemic and aesthetic consequences of a future of automated everything will be." The resulting printed publication will be distributed for free to anyone attending the event, while a PDF will also be available to download from Dezeen.

This is not the first experiment in the algorithmic newspaper business, The Guardian and the Newspaper Club have been previously testing the waters to see what story formats would better fit readers’ needs.
