Getting around the city on your bike can be hard, sweaty work. Luckily, the FlyKly Smart Wheel – a compact, circular device that attaches to your rear wheel – makes cycling a cinch, allowing riders to convert their bikes into not just an electrically assisted ride, but a smart, electrically assisted ride.

There's a bevy of features that make this device not only smart, but connected too. Linked to an iOS or Android smartphone or Pebble Watch, a companion app gives riders the option to set their top speed, track their bike via GPS in the event of theft, run diagnostics on the Smart Wheel and discover new routes for trips which can be shared with friends.

As evidenced by Helios, an alternative type of smart bike, bicycle tech continues to advance at a rapid pace. This has the usual positive health and eco implications, but beyond that, the rise of smart bikes could potentially influence how we build our cities in the future. The FlyKly Smart Wheel has smashed its $100,000 goal in the space of two days – for more, head over to its Kickstarter page.
