Fairphone: Buy a phone, start a movement from Fairphone on Vimeo.

As a consumer, sticking to products with a ethical production chain seems near impossible, as most of the manufacturing process is simply invisible to us. Enter Amsterdam-based social enterprise Fairphone, who have initiated their project to create the world’s first fairly designed and produced smartphone.

The company’s mission is not just to put their honest product on the market, but also to act as a vehicle for change on a larger scale. By investing in this smartphone, consumers support the transparency and circularity of business models and make a statement against unjust electronics. Their visible supply chain will hopefully contribute towards countering e-waste, tackle the issue of minerals mined in conflict zones and improve working conditions for manufacturers involved.

Production will start as soon as the target of five-thousand orders is reached. Fairphones run on Android OS and cost €325.  With over eight percent of their goal reached over the weekend, it seems like this call for change is in motion already.
