Extrapolis
Traditional illustration and technology collide in this instillation by French artists that uses smart projections to bring their drawings to life.
We have recently featured a number of interactive installations – from FLUIDIC sculpture at Milan Design Week, to Filament Mind at Wyoming Library. Extrapolis is slightly different, as it combines traditional methodology of hand drawing and advanced technology.
Extrapolis is a utopian urban wonderland, a painting brought to life with contemporary multimedia tools. It was designed by French artists BKYC and Théoriz Crew, who were inspired by modern cities that never sleep, as well as fictional worlds. The installation aims to blur the boundaries between traditional and digital, immersing the spectator.
The original large-scale painting was developed further with 3D animation, gesture-based technology, projection mapping and sound design. The colour of the painting changes as the day passes, and viewers are able to ‘walk’ inside the surreal city. With this project artists explored urban landscapes, while encouraging interactions between the viewers and the sculpture.
Extrapolis can be viewed at MJC Rancy in Lyon, from 11th to the 16th of March.
