Showcasing traditionally simplistic Scandinavian design, Swedish research company Innventia and designers Anna Glansen and Hanna Billqvist have collaborated to create the Sustainable Expanding Bowl – packaging that has been designed to hold freeze-dried food, and to expand into a bowl users can eat from after adding hot water.
Innventia’s design is commendable for a number of reasons; scaled-down and compressed packaging will lead to a saving on transport space and costs; the packaging itself is made from bio-based, bio-degradable material; and its crisp, white, twisted design, reminiscent of origami, is a visual prelude to the packet’s delectable contents.
We’ve always got time for clever packaging, or, indeed, disappearing packaging, and it’s refreshing to see brands considering packaging as a multifunctional, transformable, eco-friendly component of product design.
