Etch is a dynamic new mapping project created by Jeremy Weikel and Michael Yap. Utilising data sourced from social media, this tool creates beautiful maps available to purchase as posters.

Users simply permit access to their personal FourSquare account and watch as their individual check-ins are visualised using an innovative cartography service. After constructing and personalising the map with colours and various other additions, users can buy a fully personalised map charting the location and frequency of their visits to locations in a select group of cities.

The posters are so far only available in Manhattan, San Francisco and Portland, but will hopefully soon be more widespread. Etch is reminiscent of a recent trend of  turning online activity into aesthetically pleasing visualisations or artworks. Much like Streetscape Symphony did with sound, this idea transforms interaction with major cities into a palpable artform.
