Design group Nendo recently collaborated with Starbucks on a new concept coffeeshop that took its inspiration from a library.

For three weeks in September, the walls in the Tokyo space were lined, floor-to-ceiling with bookshelves containing nine different coloured books; each representing the nine different types of drinks available.

Selecting a book from the shelf, customers were able to read about that espresso serving on the sleeve before taking it to the counter in exchange for that drink. They could then keep the sleeve, which included a paper pop-out to customise their own coffee cup. As the Nendo team describe it, 'customers were able to choose an espresso drink as they would a book, and verse themselves in espresso drinks as though quietly entering into a fictional world.'

Find out more about Nendo's design approach in this Profile film we made with founder Oki Sato at London Design Festival late last year.
