The Scandinavian duo's latest exhibition lets visitors rummage through an old man’s bedroom

Providing one of the most innovative and exciting examples of what a  gallery space can be, artists Elmgreen & Dragset’s latest work at Galerie Perrotin takes the bedroom as its setting. The exhibition, entitled Past Tomorrow, takes place in the New York home of fictional character, Norman Swan.  Visitors are invited to rummage through Norman’s possessions - his books, his photographs, etc. - which are scattered throughout the room. The more you look, the more you uncover of Norman’s life.

Norman was first introduced to museum goers at the V&A exhibition, Tomorrow, in 2013. Tomorrow took place in Norman’s luxurious London apartment in the midst of his move to the US. Past Tomorrow depicts Norman’s next step - now a much more sparse setting. As an accompaniment to the exhibition, Elmgreen & Dragset have written a play also entitled Past Tomorrow. The play accounts for Norman’s last night in London and references many of the objects found in the New York setting.

The duo, Michael Elmgreen and Ingar Dragset, have been around since 1995 and are responsible for some of the more unusual and abstract iterations of art of late, including a Prada boutique in the Texan desert. It's all part of trend towards a less conventional type of art - one that looks beyond picture frames and gallery walls for its display.
