It’s no secret that the best way to discover new cultures is not through books or images, but through sensory experiences. Elixir is an exciting new food project by design studio Studio Appetit that takes us back in time to five different periods of human history by letting us taste and sample their local produce.

Presented as a selection of 'potions', each potion uses ingredients unique to either the Prehistoric period, Ancient Egypt, the Mayan World, the Tudor Dynasty and Mongol rule. Ranging in complexity, the potions are presented on hand crafted class, wood and leather, to provide an accurate representation of the tools and and materials available at these times.

Throughout time, potions have been concocted as remedies, for worship, magic and bonding. Each of Elixir's five potions consists of a mixture of ingredients - herbs, spices and fruits - available and used during these periods. Designed to bring to life the tastes and flavours from these eras the project traces ancient culinary origins.

Presented at the Design Miami 2013, this is yet another project which explores as its medium food and drink. Think back to Embedded Drinks, by food enthusiast Marti Guixe, and Bread From Scratch, conceived by Mirko Ihrig, and Cafe Balao, are but a few that bolster this growing trend.
