Swedish mobile operator Three have created the #datadonate initiative, which allows customers to donate their leftover mobile data to help the UNHCR in Syria.

For most smartphone users, Wi-Fi is a valuable commodity. Though 4G data allows for a faster browser experience, Wi-Fi is speedier and has the added bonus of being free if you’re connected to a hotspot.

As a result many of us are left with a surplus of data at the end of each month. So Swedish mobile operator Three have created the #datadonate initiative, which allows users to donate their leftover mobile data to the efforts of the UNHCR in Syria.

Users are able to choose how much of their data allowance they wish to contribute and Three donates the equivalent cash amount. Up to 10 Swedish Krona can be donated, and the process can happen up to five times a month, allowing for a total donation of 50 SEK - £4.22 – a month.

Although currently only available to non-business Swedish customers of Three’s mobile network, the technology behind #datadonate has been released open source so that other mobile operators can adopt it.
