All work and no play undoubtedly makes the office a dull environment. With this in mind, Japanese product designer Tomomi Sayuda has created an interactive digital art piece that aims to inject some cheer into the standard office workplace.

Sayuda has used the medium of (seemingly) mundane office paraphernalia - a tape dispenser, a coffee mug, stationary drawers and bookends - to create Desktop Fireworks: a vivid sensory experience that’s all about the celebration of that well earned 5 minute break. A tape cutter and mug emit a light show, small desktop drawers play music and bubbles, bookends and small notice boards release confetti. “I would like to represent the strong contrast of the daily life in the office, opposite exciting elements for entertainment such as fireworks, these two elements always need to live together, particularly in hard working societies”, writes Sayuda on her website.

Desktop Fireworks is another conceptual example, and reminder, that the modern workplace should be less defined by the monotony that is traditionally associated with a 9-5 job. Our last journal featured the Play Report which examined how companies are throwing out conventional work practices and opting for a more playful culture to help them come up with the next big thing.
