Deskontalia
A shop that sells nothing? This new installation aims to bridge the gap between offline and online retail.
San Sebastian, the picturesque and culturally vibrant town in Spain’s Basque region, has recently become home to a new shop appearing to contain nothing but cardboard boxes. Designed by Spanish architects VAUMM for group discount voucher website Deskontalia, the space offers customers a physical entity where they can pick up their deliveries, find out about the latest offers and generally interact with the brand.
With nothing to actually display in the shop, VAUMM’s concept design sees the walls and floors covered with boxy wooden furniture and shelving, reminiscent of cardboard boxes stacked up in a warehouse. The result is a brand-relevant sculpture that visitors can interact with as they want – stools and benches where customers can sit and browse the website and a reception counter lining the edge of the room also resembles a pile of boxes.
Instead of a space to sell, the shop has become a meeting place between brand and people, and an intriguing approach to bridging online and offline retail.
