The Systems & Layers class at the Copenhagen Institute of Interactive Design set out to connect two neighborhoods, separated by a harbour, using both antiquated and current technology.

Users on one side of the dock type a message into a graphical user interface. An Arduino translates that message into Morse code and transmits it via old maritime SignalLamps. The message is then received by the opposite doc and decoded back into English.

Each doc is connected to a separate Twitter account, so users from around the world can send Morse-code messages by @reply to one of the SignalLamps and broadcast their message into the harbor.

CPHsignals doesn't seem to have a lot of practical applications (these days SingalLamps are mostly used in lieu of electronic equipment) but as an art project, the group has created an interesting marriage between the antiquated and the modern.
