Construisine
A socially-conscious project created for the Vienna Design Week invites residents to cook dishes and build furniture in a public square.
Construisine is a charming hybrid project conceived by Berlin-based designers Johanna Dehio and Dominik Hehl for the Vienna Design Week. Wanting to induce a sense of community in the Viennese, the pair built an open kitchen and furniture workshop in a well-liked public square, turning it into a temporary makers’ hub.
To make the project more enjoyable and accessible, the designers shared simple food and furniture recipes based on ingredients and commonplace materials donated by the local businesses. The project also got involved youths from Caritas, a charity organisation that helps disadvantaged and marginalized young adults.
By associating cooking with furniture building, two apparently different endeavours, Construisine invites designers to rethink their social responsibility and to look beyond their trade when using design tools.
