Though the Cold War's main combatants were the US and the USSR, every country on the planet understood the potential for total armageddon. The early 1960s was a time of uncertainty and paranoia, and 50 years later, after the conflict has all but subsided, most people still don't know fact from fear.

Created by the Martin Agency and the John F. Kennedy Presidential Library, Clouds Over Cuba's main attraction is a two-hour documentary on the 1962 Cuban Missile Crisis. Beyond that, the website offers visitors an interactive experience, including a 'dossier' that fills with multimedia extras that can be viewed through the site or a mobile device. Clouds Over Cuba also gives visitors the option of synching with iCal or Google Calendar to learn about the historical events in real time. There's even a film that explores what might have been if the Cuban Missile Crisis had escalated to full-blown war.

Clouds Over Cuba is a captivating, informative project that slightly gamifies history, and it only took a half century of retrospection to make.
