Music recommendation services are nothing new. Last.fm’s been around for over a decade and music streaming services like Spotify and GrooveShark have brought a social media element into helping you discover new music.

Clerkd, a new music recommendation app designed by Finnish students offers many of the expected features, recommendations based on friend’s listening habits and a ‘Guilty Pleasures’ feature that allows socially compromising songs go unshared are all understandably present.

However what makes Clerkd interesting is the geographical aspect it adds to the mix. By detecting what other users have listened to locally, Clerkd can offer you a specific playlist based on your location. In theory, this would mean that to discover what kind of music is popular in a particular place, or even just a venue, all you’d need to do is use the app there.

This is an interesting case of designers recognising and embracing how internet connectivity is becoming increasingly mobile.
