City of Drones
Through the power of music and visualisation, we're encouraged to see drones in a new light, re-imagining their potential
It looks pretty likely that soon, drones will become a lot more integrated into our day to day lives. With Amazon teasing the idea of delivery drones or drones that can give holiday goers a preview of their destinations, their uses are diverse to say the least. However, a city filled with drones is a future we may not have to just imagine for much longer.
London based design studio FIELD, who are known for their visually interactive videos, such as Energy Flow, recently teamed up with Liam Young, a self-described speculative architect, and musician John Cale, formerly of The Velvet Underground, to create City of Drones. This digital landscape allows an insight into the world of a lost drone, taking it away from its association with the military and presenting it in a new light through the power of music and visualisation. Users are encouraged to re-imagine the potential and possibilities of drones. The drones are almost humanised, generating feelings of sympathy for these flying robots, lost and lonely above the chaotic ground below. You can experience a live performance at the Barbican Theatre this September.
