Last year we saw Run an Empire use fitness tracking to score points in a massive-multi-player strategy game. Taking this idea to the next level, Checkpoints Race is the world’s first connected running league, transforming running into an online, global team sport.

To enter the race, participants must create a team of 5 runners. Participants can also register as a solo runner and create a team with runners from around the world.

The Checkpoints Race app automatically syncs with players’ favourite running app, scoring them in Energy Points for how far and how frequently they run. By completing specific challenges, participants can score more energy points for their team. Teams can also recruit supporters who, by running, can also score energy points for the team.

Come September, the top 50 teams in the league qualify for the final race in the French Alps.

The gaming world has long been competing online and team sports have always been synonymous with physical interaction. It’s interesting to see a virtual sports community where sportspeople can compete with teams and teammates they’ll probably never meet.
