If there's one thing – maybe after time travel -  that people associate with the idea of 'the future' it's holograms. CastAR brings us one step closer to what we've seen in countless science fiction films. While augmented reality has uses outside of the gaming industry, (see the AR Music Festival), it certainly lends itself well to application in gaming, e.g. Microsoft's Illumiroom.

However taking a slightly different route to utilising AR is CastAR, currently seeking funding on Kickstarter, an ingenious combination of multiple technologies. 3D shutter glasses with two attached mini projectors create the stereoscopic image that reacts to the sensor on the middle of the glasses, tracking the motion of the wearer. Allowing the player to move freely while the projected image stays in place. The complementary retro-reflective surface for 3D projections is flexible, and allows the user to either hang it vertically or lay it flat for board games and the like. CastAR will also incorporate other objects into its projected world, such as a magic wand they've developed that allows the user to interact with other projections.
