Plants Out Of Place celebrates botanical diversity
“Found flowering on wasteland unnoticed, unofficial, accidental,” sang Jarvis Cocker of weeds – the ‘wild’ plant life seasoned gardeners hack away at, teeth gritted. These darling buds aren’t all bad though.
“Weeds play a significant role in our environment,” explains Jenny Lee, of Studio Aikieu who teamed up with gardening house Coloni to celebrate the ‘troublesome’ plants.
“In other cultures weeds are celebrated and cultivated for their medicinal, edible and material value,” say Coloni. “Yet in modern society, these wild growing plants are extracted and destroyed.”
The exhibition, Plants Out Of Place – with diverse flora and forms from collaborators, including Studio Drift, Alexandra Stueck, Gutedort, and Whispery Savoury, seeks to change all that. With playful dishes, edible fungi and herbal remedies the projects looks to question how we can better use wild matter to help create a more sustainable future.
'Plants Out Of Place' at Queen's Park, London, NW6 6SG 19 – 22 September; open 09:30 - 18:30
