Experimental Chicago rock outfit Califone has taken to Tumblr for their latest music video, but not at all as you might expect. For its new single Stitches (have a look here), the band teamed up with filmmaker Braden King to make an interactive video with images are sourced from a fixed set of Tumblr blogs. In their words, it is “an ever changing ‘music video’ that creates itself on the fly using imagery and animated GIFs.”

The effect is somewhere between a slideshow on steroids and a new-age silent film, with images flickering by dreamily as the song plays. And despite the fact that it works on an algorithm, the photos invariably fit surprisingly well with the song. Still, you can even plug in additional Tumblr sources for a perhaps more unpredictable experience.

We seem to be entering something of a golden age for the interactive music video. In just the past few weeks we’ve seen several, all with dramatically different approaches, such as Bruno Mars’ Instagram-fuelled video, a video by Duologue made with a Microsoft Kinect, and a team up called 'Unite All Originals' between adidas Originals, Run DMC and A-Track.
