Crickets are most than just pesky household intruders. They are culinary treats and, due to the work of photographer and new media artist, Harvey Moon, crickets can be artists too. Bugs Draw For Me is a series of “drawings” by crickets. To create these drawings, a camera tracked the jumpy, spontaneous, movement of the cricket. This data was transformed in algorithms by Moon’s Drawing Machine, which then interpreted the algorithms onto paper to create the final piece.

The end result is oddly mesmerizing. A representation of patterns in nature that we presume to be random but when put forth in a concrete manner, it becomes obvious that there is a clear set of geometric rules that even the smallest of creatures abides by. The use of new technology exposes nature’s little secrets in a visually compelling way.
