It’s no secret that the increasing role of technology in our lives has lead to an accompanying decline in traditional communication. Real-world interaction has been relegated to the back seat, with social media and all its offspring steering the course of our daily social lives.

However, the Branch Out Movement is looking to change this. The mission of the initiative is to break down the barriers that prevent people from meeting in a real environment.  It all starts with a bracelet that users receive upon signing-up for the project. The bracelet serves as a conversation piece, as well as a reminder of your commitment to be present in the physical world. From there, users are sent weekly challenges to encourage real-world interaction.  Challenges range from ‘ask someone for a song recommendation’ to ‘approach someone reading a magazine’. If you complete the challenge you’re awarded with points and, eventually, perks.

The Movement is part of a bigger trend which is getting users to turn away from the screen and towards the real world.

Another example of using technology to disconnect from the virtual is Stop, Breath and Think, an app which gets users to switch off and get in tune with themselves through meditation.
