Gif's are everywhere nowadays. From thousands of tumblrs across the world to luxury brands advertising campaigns, the Web 1.0 craze has truly taken off. We have been interested in the development for a while, throwing our very own Animate Gif show back last July, and writing a Briefing about the whole 'Dial-up Design' craze in March.

The art form is now being celebrated by the newly relaunched Photographer's Gallery in London for their upcoming exhibition 'Born in 1987: The Animated GIF'. The exhibition is devoted to an overlooked image format best experienced on screen, and features work by over 40 artists from a range of disciplines. The resulting submissions range from, 'the graphic, to the photographic, the subtle to the psychedelic,' and demonstrate a huge variety of approaches which respond to GIF's history and aesthetic. For many of the artists involved, this was the first time experimenting with the medium, resulting in some truly unique contributions.

The public have also been asked to submit their own creations via a Tumblr hashtag 'bornin1987', with the best submissions displayed on rotation on a Video Wall in the galleries entrance. It's an interesting exhibition as it showcases an iconic, web based phenomena in a large contemporary gallery space and celebrates its position in our visual and cultural language.
