An online platform celebrating the bold and inspirational voices over 70
“Someone who is shunning age stereotypes and still succeeding, creating or just living life to the full,” say Bolder magazine co-founders Dominique Afacan and Helen Cathcart, speaking about the profile of people that populate their online platform celebrating inspirational figures over the age of 70.
The concept for Bolder came from frequent travels in which Afacan and Cathcart, a journalist and photographer respectively, were paired for work projects.
“We frequently work together on location for travel stories and we realised that the most interesting people we met on our trips were very rarely the same people we were being commissioned to interview or photograph,” says Afacan. “It sometimes felt like everyone was ignoring the most fascinating person at the party.”
Ultimately, Bolder is testament to the fact that creativity doesn’t end at 70. Featuring figures such as legendary photographer, Terry O’Neill, and painter and printmaker Tess Jaray, the platform is all about showcasing inspiring voices outside the limit of age.
Fetishising youth and producing generic portrayals of the boomer generation has perhaps reached saturation point. With icons such as Joan Didion fronting major fashion houses’ campaigns, our perception of boomers seem to be finally matching their perception of themselves: not adhering to age stereotypes and, as Afacan puts it: “still succeeding, creating or just living life to the full.”
