Each summer for the past six years, entrepreneurial gallerist Hannah Barry and a group of esteemed friends and colleagues have been transforming the roof of a Peckham car park in to an arts and culture hub for the area, Bold Tendencies. Barry’s annual sculpture show on the roof also mustered up attention from collaborative event Frank’s Café and Campari bar, the brainchild of Frank Boxer, together a tour de force in uniting culture and leisure in South London.
Now the team, which also includes Hannah Barry Gallery co-founder Sven Müdner, have unveiled an ambitious proposal to develop the multi-story edifice in to a permanent arts site. Still campaigning under the name Bold Tendencies, Barry’s team have put forward that the complex will contain light-industrial spaces, studios and Kunsthalle-style (independent) galleries. With the aim to increase awareness of Peckham as an arts district even more so, the project also has the valuable economic advantages of creating over 500 year-round jobs over the 2 years.

In the meantime, Barry has released the summer schedule for Bold Tendencies, which includes a rooftop public square inspired by Derek Jarman’s Dungeness Garden, a contemporary music festival featuring Sonic Youth’s Thurston Moore and a Nigerian film festival.
