Our Future of Listening forum last week explored how musicians and labels are adding an extra level of engagement to their musical offerings, from creating bespoke apps (see REWORK), to making listeners work for their music (see Kid Koala). It seems fitting, therefore, to end the year on the most extravagant example of this trend, this time from Swedish indie band Shout Out Louds.

To promote their latest single, 'Blue Ice', the band released a limited run of DIY kits which allowed users to make their record out of ice, and play it on an actual record player. Each kit came with a mould, which when filled with water and frozen, produced the record.

While its an innovative idea and an interesting way of engaging users, we can't help but feel this is perhaps one step too far. Not only does the record sound awful when played on the record player, but its bound to leave a wet puddle near some electrical appliance, which is nothing but dangerous.
