Bioscope
Taking inspiration from their childhood, designers have built a toy-like video viewer that can be digitally loaded with films that play when the crank is turned.
Recreating the charms of past technology seems to be quite popular this week. YouTube's new VHS button for example, takes digital clips back to fuzzier times. Similarly, the Bioscope, designed by Jon Stamm and Simon de Baaker, aims to combine modern, digital tech with the aesthetic appeal of toys and gadgets from the 70s and 80s. Acting like an old Fisher Price movie player, a film clip loaded onto a USB stick is inserted into the back of the 'gun' and plays as the crank is turned, all viewable on a mini LCD screen through the scope.
By allowing the speed of the video to be controlled by the hand crank the device is not only harking back to less complex times, but also highlighting how the simplest solutions are often the best.
