In an attempt to merge the physical world with the psychic dimension, artists/programmers Joao Beira and Yago de Quay have created Biomeditation, a performance project that creates artwork from brainwaves.

Using the mind as their medium, the artists use an EEG headset (quite similar to Xbox Kinect) to track performers’ brainwaves as they meditate, capturing and translating cognitive and emotional experiences into audio and visual compositions. The concept is an exploration into the ideal way to express sound and visualisations - using the brain and its thoughts as a highly personalised interface. We've seen biofeedback incorporated into art and music projects in the past, (Greg Fox's Mitral Transmissions album being one of the better examples), but this is the first time we've seen the practice linked to the mind.

And although we’re all aware of the benefits of meditation, it’s somehow made all the more appealing with the knowledge that it can now be digitised to create wonderful works of art. It would be interesting to see this project put into practice at a concert, where the performer wears the headpiece.
