Local entrepreneurs in Minneapolis have opened the city’s first self-service bicycle repair kiosk, the Bike Fixtation. The vending machine offers basic tools for cyclists in need, including tubes, patch kits, lights, snacks and drinks. There’s also an electric tire pump beside the vending machine that lets people re-inflate their tyres. Located along the Midtown Greenway, the city’s 5.5 mile stretch of highway for cyclists and pedestrians, the kiosk serves as a necessary repair centre open 18 hours a day. Minneapolis has gained a great reputation for its large cycling community, and this project helps to reaffirm the city’s support for bike culture. In London we’ve seen an influx of cyclists with the introduction of the Boris Bikes cycle hire scheme, and the increase of coffee shop-cum-bike shops such as Look Mum No Hands. We’re hoping that we’ll soon see similar repair kiosks dotted around the urban landscape of London to support our growing cycling population.
